The Freebie centers on Darren (Shepard) and Annie (Aselton), a young married couple with an enviable relationship built on love trust and communication. 没有用华丽镜头展示自然奇观，而是将摄影机客观平静地对准自然物质，当探险队深入洞穴，便开启了万物之灵性。在洞内的摄影机设置令人想起《同志之谊》在矿井下的obstruction美学，在此，这种去除辞藻的限制性体现出超验感，与对物质的尊重。对历史的纪录式搬演，又隐藏起叙事，最终完成一首纯粹关于人与自然的赞美诗。
摄影机的距离感是反直觉又成功的，是一种自然主义的选择，角色只是过客，他们的行为微不足道。虽然表面效果类似，但与强拗机位的《在哥伦布》截然不同。总觉得不沉沉睡去一段时间是对不起这样一部电影的。

纸片燃烧旋落入洞穴、天梯在光线中摇摆、远观草地随风一浪一浪地赶、绘制洞穴草图时反复沾墨细描……很抓人的视角和构图。
然而，燃烧总是需要燃料的。画面每每从狭窄昏暗的洞穴转向开阔明丽的山色，转向昏倒衰微的老人。大概他们正是文明的祭品。
